East Providence High School


East Providence High School in East Providence, Rhode Island takes pride in their students and teachers. They value their student’s education and do their best to help all students succeed. It is a fairly large high school with roughly 2029 students and also includes a vocational building for students interested in entering the work field after graduating from high school. Areas of focus will be student involvement, health and safety, diversity in the town, and if East Providence High School has met the No Child Left Behind requirements.

Community Background


East Providence High School is located on 2000 Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence, Rhode Island. It is a public high school, grades 9-12, with 2029 students enrolled in school system and 139 teachers on staff. The majority of students are white Americans; however, diversity does exist within the school system. East Providence High School offers many extracurricular activities, organizations, and sports, which a majority of the student body partakes in. Currently, 582 students are involved in school related activities and clubs and 778 are involved in sports (RI Department of Elementary and Secondary Education). Approximately 10% of the students in the high school take an advanced placement exam and roughly 53% of those students scored at college level mastery. These scores indicate that a just over half of the students taking the exams are at college level, which is average. In many of the health categories, East Providence High was below the standards and averages. Approximately 27% of students at East Providence say they smoke at least once a day, compared to the state average of roughly 23%. The percentage of students who said they used illegal substances such as marijuana, uppers, downers and inhalants within the last 30 days at East Providence High School was 30%, compared to the state average in Rhode Island High Schools of 25%. On the issue of school safety, 26% of students reported that they were robbed one or more times and 37% reported that students tried to sell them drugs one or more times in school (InfoWorks! 2007).

As for state wide tests, East Providence scored around roughly 43% on state reading tests, compared to the state average of about 50% on state reading tests. They were also below the state average on the state mathematics tests, coming in at 35%. Interaction between the parents of the students and the teachers is very important. It allows the parent to be informed on his or her daughter, but also gives the teacher insight and further knowledge on the student. In East Providence High School, 75% of teachers say they maintain a positive relationship with the students’ parents. However, the teachers believe that only 17% of the parents and the community are supportive of the school (InfoWorks! 2007).

District Summary


East Providence is an urban city with a population of 48, 668. Of the 48,668 people living in East Providence, 42,111 are white, 2,245 are black or African American, 225 are American Indian or Alaskan Native, 559 are Asian, and 23 are Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. There are 20,945 households and out of that number of households, 13.1% are of single parents. The median household income in East Providence is around $39,108. The city of East Providence is not however, the best area. As of 2001, East Providence had reported 236 violent crimes in the city (U.S Census Bureau). In total at the high school, there were a reported 480 suspensions in 2006. Of those 480 suspensions, 119 were for disorderly conduct, followed by 63 suspensions for insubordination and disrespect. Luckily, there were no suspensions for very serious things like gang activity, bomb threats, hazing, or hate crimes. However, all suspensions at the school are taken very seriously (InfoWorks! 2007)

School Analysis


East Providence High School is the only high school located in East Providence. There are however, many more high schools throughout the city of Providence. Out of the 46,668 people living in providence 24,505 are high school graduates (School Data Direct). A technical center is offered at East Providence High School and it has a variety of programs available for students to plan to jump right into the work force once they are out of high school. The programs that are available are auto-collision, automotive, bio-medical, construction, culinary arts, graphic design, greenhouse, landscaping, office tech, pre-engineering, and robotics. Some of the sports offered at the high school are cheerleading, boys and girls soccer, football, boy and girls tennis, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls indoor track, hockey, swim, wrestling, baseball, golf, softball and boys and girls outdoor track (East Providence High School website). The school also met and exceeded some of the standards of the No Child Left Behind Act. The graduation rate average was 90.6%, which was above the state average of 85.2% (InfoWorks! 2007).

Teachers working with families ensure that every student’s transition to society is personal and meaningful. Students, administrators, faculty, and staff are part of a culture promoting a safe environment to explore new ideas, meet new challenges, respect diversity and contribute to the community." Despite room for improvement in some aspects of the school system such as the state testing, East Providence tries their best to help all of their students do well in and out of school. Their main focus of area is for all students to graduate and move on with their lifes to become successful human beings and thus far, they have done a pretty good job!
